Tao’s Redress Design Award collection, ‘Ironic suggestion’, expresses dissatisfaction with cliché and technical rules in the fashion industry by using materials in unconventional ways to challenge norms. The collection makes use of unwanted selvedges collected from brands, charities, and students. Using a patchwork technique, he creates a multi-coloured striped dress with stretchy selvedges around the neckline for comfort. Another dress made from deadstock fabric is also lined with selvedges as part of the design, as well as to offer practical details like pockets.
